Director, Cancer Information and Support Services
The Cancer Council of Victoria
Doreen Akkerman, is the Director of the Cancer Information and Support Service (CISS) at The Cancer Council of Victoria, the Helen Macpherson Smith Trust Fellow and a founding member of the International Cancer Information Services Group, and a member of the Order of Australia, General Division. The Cancer Information Services model which she developed is used in hospitals and health organisations throughout Australia, Canada and Singapore. Doreen is the founding Director of Strategic Health Communications International Pty Ltd. (SHCI).
Doreen is the executive supervisor, in conjunction with La Trobe University, for the Breast Cancer Nurse Distance Learning Program and developed the successful series of Sexuality and Cancer Workshops for clinicians, nurses and patients. She is the author of many published articles and reports regarding communication, development and maintenance of health information services and the impact of ageing and disease on sexuality.
The Victorian CISS responds to over 54,000 calls per year and covers the whole spectrum of cancer information throughout the cancer journey. They offer information counselling and referral.
