The International Union Against Cancer (UICC) offers several different international programs that provide opportunities for professional education. These programs may offer ICISG members opportunities for education, training, evaluation and information exchange.
UICC Cancer Capacity Building Fund
Funded by countries implementing Relay for Life®
Eligibility: Voluntary organizations with UICC membership located in resource-constrained countries.
Amount: 10,000-15,000 USD
Priority areas: Education, information dissemination
The fund provides support to voluntary organization members in resource-constrained countries to deliver community-based education and information-dissemination projects that are able to demonstrate long-term sustainability. The Fund was established with contributions from countries implementing Relay For Life - an event licensed and supported by the American Cancer Society.
The Cancer Capacity Building Fund, which has so far dispersed US$270,000, will prioritise projects that directly support the goals and objectives of the World Cancer Declaration. Launched at the 2008 World Cancer Congress, World Cancer Declaration is a global call to action aimed at bringing the growing cancer crisis to the attention of policymakers at the national, regional and global levels. It sets out 11 comprehensive, achievable, time-bound targets for the delivery of effective cancer prevention; early detection, treatment and palliative care worldwide.
In order to be considered, applicants must demonstrate how their project directly advances the achievement of at least one of the 11 World Cancer Declaration Targets.
The Fund offers grants of USD 10’000-15’000. Grants are awarded for projects with duration of 4-6 months with the possibility of extension for one further year. Special consideration will be given to organizations that develop collaborative projects with local partners (nurses’ organizations, researchers, local government, schools) with complimentary capabilities and resources in order to create powerful synergies and extend the project’s impact.

International Cancer Technology Transfer Fellowships (ICRETT):
A UICC Fellowships Programme Coordinator was contacted about the possibility
of piloting the ICRETT fellowship as a mechanism for an exchange program
between ICISG member organizations. UICC is very interested in having
Eastern Europe and developing countries participate in the fellowship
and for other countries to participate and demonstrate that these countries
benefit indirectly. Applications may be submitted at any time. The fellowship
is only awarded to candidates who have identified a supportive host organization.
Candidates must be able to communicate effectively in the language of
the host.
Fellowships are up to 3 months in length with UICC stipend support for up to 1 month for appropriately qualified candidates. (Funded by a group of North American, European and Australian sponsors, the Association of UICC Fellows and the UICC Roll of Honour).
Application closing date: none
Selection results: within 60 days of receipt
Number of awards: 130 a year
Average value: US$ 3,000
All applications are reviewed and scored by an international review panel comprised of: a reviewer from the host country; a reviewer from the same country as the applicant; reviewer not associated with either country. A project chair selects the three reviewers who are active in the subject areas (e.g., cancer information and dissemination).
